The early years

Geothermal seawater is discovered and the lagoon forms.

Subterranean seawater is discovered and the lagoon begins to form.

People bathe in warm geothermal waters and discover the water’s healing powers.

1987 | Scientific research

The geothermal seawater in the lagoon attracts the interest of scientists and doctors.
1987 | Facilities are built
Changing facilities are built and access to the lagoon is subject to regulations.

1992–2002

The Blue Lagoon is founded, and the geothermal seawater sparks interest worldwide.

The Blue Lagoon Research and Development Center is established.

1994 | Treatment center opens
The Blue Lagoon Medical Clinic opens and offers natural treatments for psoriasis that are based on the healing properties of the geothermal seawater.

1995 | Skincare products launched

The Blue Lagoon's first skincare product, Silica Mud Mask, is introduced.

The lagoon is moved to its current location and a spa is built.

2002–2012

Blue Lagoon stores open in Reykjavík and at Keflavik international airport.
Lava Restaurant est 2007
2007 | Blue Lagoon expanded
The Blue Lagoon's facilities are expanded, and the lagoon doubled in size. Lava Restaurant opens.

2012 | A National Geographic Wonder of the World

National Geographic magazine selects the Blue Lagoon as one of the 25 wonders of the world.

2012–2022

Opening of Silica Hotel and The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon.

Incredible expansion culminates in the opening of The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon.
2019 | Moss Restaurant
Moss Restaurant at The Retreat is recommended by the Michelin Guide.

2023–2025

Diverse operations around the country.

2023 | Kerlingarfjöll
Kerlingarfjöll Highland Base opens in the Icelandic highlands.
2023 | Blue Lagoon Compnay
A parent company is established around growing and diverse activities.

2023 | Hrauneyjar

Hrauneyjar joins the group of operating units owned by the company.
2024 | Construction begins in Þjórsárdalur
Construction begins on the development at Rauðukambar in Þjórsdárdalur.
2024 | Hoffell
Renovations to the accommodation and bathing facilities in Hoffell, which became part of the company's operations.
