The water of the Blue Lagoon is unlikeany other. It originates 2,000 meters below the surface, is a blend of seawaterand fresh water, and is rich in silica, algae and minerals. In 2012, National Geographic named the Blue Lagoon one of the 25 Wonders of the World.
Silica Hotel is a four-star hotel just steps from the Blue Lagoon. The hotel has its roots in the Blue Lagoon Clinic, which still operates on site and offers Icelandic psoriasis patients natural treatments free of charge.

Research has been at the core of the Blue Lagoon since its founding in 1992. It all began in 1987, when Dr. Grímur Sæmundsen and his team of scientists, including Ása Brynjólfsdóttir, began investigating the healing properties of the geothermal seawater.
At the Blue Lagoon R&D Center, the active ingredients of the seawater, silica, minerals and algae, are studied and isolated. The Center also develops ways to put them to use, including cultivating algae with carbon dioxide from geothermal gas, which reduces environmental impact.
